which is at the heart of logical positivism, was called into question by Quine in his famous paper "Two dogmas of empiricism".

For some, the publication of that paper spelled the end of logical positivism. So it is meaningless for you to say "selfishness" is something that can be understood without recourse to experience. It simply cannot be true by convention alone.

However, if it is an empirical concept, it is subject to the test of Popper's doctrine of falsification. Adding conditions to such a concept only makes matters worse by evading rigorous scientific scrutiny.

I hope you understand the point I'm making.
