“What Lu was concerned about when his wife gave a birth was if he would have a BOY or a GIRL, not his wife's safety, and that was why he tried to climb a tree to watch, so his mon-in-law was cheated.
每句都是错的，以大写字母纠正如下：
What Lu was concerned about WHILE his wife WAS GIVING BIRTH TO A BABY was WHETHER he would have a boy or a girl, not his wife's safety, and that was why he tried to climb UP a tree to watch. So his MOTHER-IN-LAW was FOOLED. ”
看了这段，我几乎敢断定老芦的英文口语是不大好的，而哑巴则相对不那么讲究书面英语。
when his wife gave ...这种时态虽然不够准确，但用于口语完全可以接受（甚至用得更广），老芦硬要改成过去进行时，说明他平时太注重书面英语而口语感觉却不大好。
gave a birth当然错误，但改成gave birth就完全足够，加上to a baby纯属画蛇添足。
if...or显然不对，应该用Whether，但在口语中这也算不得什么大错。（比如Please tell me if you want to go or not)而且在这里用if he would have a boy更好一些。
至于Climb a tree，绝对正确，Mountain climbers climb mountains.当然这里用the tree 比较好，因为这里的tree是老芦回忆中已经提到过的特定tree。另外tried to climb a tree没有必要，直接用climb a tree即可，因为climb是一个动作，不一定代表“成功爬上”
芦哑双方在这里共同的毛病则是：很别扭地使用and that was why he tried to climb UP a tree to watch去延长一个本来已经不适宜继续演唱的句子（因为这里的that含意模糊）。无论在口语还是在书面英语中，这里正确的用法都应该是另起一句THAT was why he tried to climb UP a tree to watch. （这里的that就很明显指的是前面一个句子的全部），考虑到下面一句So his MOTHER-IN-LAW was FOOLED不容易处理，这整个句子就应该这样写：
What Lu was (建议加really) concerned about when his wife was giving birth was if he could have a boy. He didn't climb the tree to watch his wife's safety, so his MOTHER-IN-LAW was FOOLED.
