Yesterday afternoon we had a meeting and the news broken by the big head really
broke my heart.
For the past two years, the institution where I work has been experiencing financial
difficulties. Now it’s in serious financial crises. The big head announced at the meeting
that either this place would be closed down, or at least a large proportion of staff would
be laid off.
So in order to play safe, I’ll have to look for a post elsewhere at this age! Can you think
of something worse than that? Who’s going to hire an old sod that is to retire in a few
years? Perhaps I should give it a serious thought to become a professional writer NOW.
At any rate, it does not seem likely that I keep writing here and produce at least one piece
per day. It is more likely that I post up one or two pieces per week. One thing is for sure:
I am going to finish the novel “Suibian’s Sky” before I disappear altogether.
Taking this opportunity, I would like to apologize to ~浴火凤凰 as I referred to him as
“smart ass” yesterday. This is certainly an insult and I regret this uncouth behavior.
Nonetheless, please allow me to explain that this is not a swear word as both he and
banzhu 02 firmly believed.
The confusion arose only because those guys learnt English in the USA, where “ass”
means either “bottom” or “donkey”. In contrast, in Britain, “ass” means “donkey”, nothing
else, while another name of “backside” is “arse”. In British English, the pronunciations
of both “ass” and “arse” are identical but the spellings are different, whereas in the USA,
their pronunciations and spellings are just the same.
Actually, the word “ass” (donkey) is used to describe a stupid person in both countries.
“Smart ass”, as I said above, is not a swear word at all. People just use it to call those
who are not terribly clever but extremely keen to show off their smartness. In effect, it is
similar to “smart fool”.
But of course this is not the excuse for me to use that very impolite word to insult ~浴火凤凰.
Therefore, I would like to apologize to him once again.
I would like 鬼谷子 to confirm whether he still wants to bet. Let me repeat the condition
once more: If you bet Chen Shuibian is to win the election, then if he loses, you will have
to send £100 to Langxie. If you win, then I will send the same amount of money to Langxie.
It’s up to you whether to bet or not, but I have to remind you that if you withdraw now,
nobody will take the bet, so I will send no money to anyone even if Chen wins the election.
Do you understand? If you do, please leave an unambiguous message here. After all,
£100 is not a huge fortune and even a guy facing lay-off like me can still afford it, is it?
Finally, I would also like to apologize to you for calling you “great grand-nephew” in retaliation
to your calling me “nephew”. We are older than 50 and yet we behave just like kids,
which is really, really incredible, ridiculous and stupid.
