The computing gurus of my institute just called me saying that they had a good look at my computer and could not do anything to help. It was not virus or other software problems that they could easily handle. Rather, the hard-disk was faulty and it did not drive. They could not even see any data in there. As this was a mechanical problem, they could not solve it. I should buy a new hard-disk or a new PC. If I wanted to retrieve the data, I could contact commercial firms, but they would charge me like a hell.
I was quite surprised that the problem turned out to be a mechanical one. But I understood later. After the virus had caused problem, I repeatedly switched on and off the computer many, many times until it was completely dead. the hard-disk or drive or whatever must have been damaged in the process.
Anyway, I called a few firms asking about the price of retrieving the data, only to find what the gurus had said was true. All the firms said that if the professionals of my institute could not see the data, then it would be a forensic problem that needed experts’ care. There was indeed such a forensic group in one firm, but their prices were just impossible. Basically, those guys work with the police to retrieve data in criminal cases. So they are well-fed by crimes and used to high prices.
So this seems to be the sad end of my story. I need a new PC, just before my early retirement! What a Christmas present! Even so, I can live with it. What upsets me most is that the data cannot be retrieved unless I pay an awful lot of money, and I do not have backups of the data. That means I would lose all my Chinese writings since December, 2001, which included all the political essays and literary pieces.
Surely, most of these writings were posted up at this forum except for the period between May-Nov, 2003 during which time I was on exile. But the problem is that I deleted all the serious articles before the exile. I could retrieve every piece I left at Boxun, but not the few million words I left here. What a nightmare! I am just like the old fisherman’s wife in Pushkin’s fairy tale. Last night I was the queen, this morning I woke up in the same shabby hut. Intellectually, I am completely broke. All I have in my hand now is a faded glorious dream.
Now my only hope is 六者, the Great Savior. I know his hobby is to download every piece of junk from the internet, number and archive it chronically. So he must have every piece I published here. 六者, please come to my rescue. You are not only my hope, but also the only reason why I should live on this dreadful life.
May I remind you of the fact that you owe me a great deal. For the past 5 years, you have read a few million words I produced, being intellectually educated, challenged or provoked, emotionally stirred, angered, amused or irritated by them, without realizing that they are the crystals of my sweat and blood and they are ALL FREE! Now it’s pay time and you’ll have to do something to repay my great favor.
Now listen carefully. Please click Banzhu’s letter box and contact 2u2m, so as to get my password to this forum. By doing so, you will be able to post up articles in my name. Then use the “article search” (do not use my “wenji” as it is not complete) to find every piece (“zhutie”-- main posters, not following comments—“gentie”) I have written, check the date of each article and find out if you have a copy in your archives. If there is a copy in your archives, and the corresponding one in the forum is empty, post it up again. If it’s in my wenji, you can use “edit” option to put the article in. If it’s not, then repost it as a new poster but indicate the date at the end of the article.
I know I am asking too much. But do remember, for the past five years, I have labored like a slave, spending at least 4 hours per day to produce such an enormous amount of words for you and others, providing you guys with free education and entertainment. What you are going to do is of course troublesome and tedious, but is no comparison to my contributions. Many thanks for your help in anticipation!
