though you may have a point here.
Perhaps you're right that the unit of selection is the species, not individuals. But what I would say is that throughout human history, some civilizations survive while others got wiped out for many different reasons which cannot be understood in terms of evolution alone.
Today there are predictions, based on demographic characteristics and tendencie, that the Europeans and the Japanese may no longer exist on the face of the Earth as a civilization if they do not put the issue of "reproduction" into their cultural agendas, that is, these peoples would not be able "survive" by, let's say, 2500 unless they collectively pay more attention to the declining birth rate.
I wonder how you would explain this in terms of human evolution.
