Alternative solution?
Divide 12 balls in 3 groups, each has 4 balls
1. Try group 1 and 2
2.1. If unbalanced, the odd ball must be among the 8. A1, A2, A3, A4, and B1, B2, B3, B4. Move any two balls (A1, B1) from each side and replace with two good balls. Swap two balls (A2, B2) between side A and B.
2.1.1. If unbalance doesn't change, either A4 or B4 is bad.
2.1.2 If balanced, the two balls (A1, B1) take out from A and B sides are bad.
2.1.3 if the balance switched from side to another, the two swapped between A and B (A2, B2) are bad.
After 2.1.1, 2.1.2 or 2.1.3, the problem becomes find a bad one among two with one try and a bunch of good balls. It is easy to resolve.
If 2.1 balanced. the left 4 are bad, try any two.
-If unbalanced, try any one of the two with a good ball. If balanced, the ball is good, the other one left is bad.
-If balanced, try any one of the left two with good ball, If unbalanced, this one tried is bad. If balanced the left one is bad.
