India's progress was retarded by its social baggages and a long socialist policy that impedes economic prosperity.

However it has a stable democratic government. Its progress is slow and steady. China, on the other hands, had too many up and downs during the last century. Who knows? It may self-destruct at some point. That is why the government is so nervous.
