In the States or western countries they view it differently from Chinese. So they use the term of compulsive, such as in the case of a compulsive gambler, to mean the severe addiction to something bad. Chinese 上瘾 might mean two things in the western sense: One is some kid of habit that can not be restrictly defined as addiction from the western standard of point of view. The other is the so-called addiction. Any habit that you don't have to risk your life (health)or future for it may not be regarded as addiction, in my opinion.
So, Chinese 上瘾 has boarder meanings.
