美國的歷任總統, 我最佩服的是林肯. 他出生貧窮, 卻有高度文學修養. 寫的東西短小精深, 卻結構宏偉. 他的蓋提斯堡演說是代表作. 現在推薦他的另一篇代表作--二次就職演說

最後兩段堅毅不拔, 有如滔滔大海, 回味無窮:
Fondly do we hope, fervently do we pray, that this mighty scourge of war may speedily pass away. Yet, if God wills that it continue until all the wealth piled by the bondsman's two hundred and fifty years of unrequited toil shall be sunk, and until every drop of blood drawn with the lash shall be paid by another drawn with the sword, as was said three thousand years ago, so still it must be said "the judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether."
With malice toward none, with charity for all, with firmness in the right as God gives us to see the right, let us strive on to finish the work we are in, to bind up the nation's wounds, to care for him who shall have borne the battle and for his widow and his orphan, to do all which may achieve and cherish a just and lasting peace among ourselves and with all nations.
這裡的主要論點是畜奴制是美國的原罪. 內戰是美國全體人民在贖罪, 這裡沒有仇恨. 這是神對美國原罪的懲罰. 懲罰南方, 因為他們畜奴. 懲罰北方, 因為他們容忍畜奴.
美國因內戰重鑄. 美國八年獨立戰爭, 華盛頓面對的挑戰是純軍事的. 林肯面對的是複雜百倍的政治問題. 美國當年幾十個州, 每個都有近乎完整的州政府, 要選擇獨立, 馬上可以進入狀況. 南方獨立後, 北方很多州也有可能分裂出去, 東部, 中西部, 和西部的利益也都不同. 還有隨時準備脫離聯邦的一些邊界州. 別說徵兵開戰, 就是要維持北部的統一就不容易. 但林肯做到了.
