Herzog jury shuffled after one asks to quit

SANTA CLARA -- After learning she had been fired from her job, a juror on the panel deciding the guilt or innocence of Loren Herzog in his multiple-murder case was excused Tuesday.
Shortly after noon, San Joaquin County Superior Court Judge Michael Garrigan received a note from Juror No. 1, Sandra Porter, who asked to be excused from jury duty because she'd been terminated from her position as a computer programmer at DeAnza Community College in Cupertino.
"I don't have any other means of support," Porter told Garrigan after he called her to the courtroom while the rest of the jury stayed behind. "Also, I've been diagnosed with diabetes, and my doctor thinks things are too stressful (for me) right now."
Garrigan excused Porter, who left the courtroom with apologies to the defense and prosecution.
