i think it is normal for some or many people to put up a smoke screen to hide their ture identities, Cao An is no exception. the only difference is: his smoke screen becomes the object of fasination. It is supposed to be a distraction, but tragically the distraction becomes an attraction, probably because he could not keep his personal stories out of his articles
