TAIPEI, Taiwan (Reuters) -- Taiwan President Chen Shui-bian's Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) won the most votes in an election on Saturday, a result that could ease pressure on the independence-minded leader to reconcile with China.
The Central Election Commission said the DPP won 42.52 percent of votes, compared to 38.92 percent by the island's biggest opposition party, the Nationalists or Kuomintang (KMT).
The poll was to elect an ad hoc, 300-member National Assembly to ratify constitutional amendments approved by parliament last year. But Taiwan-China ties dominated the agenda and the election was viewed as a vote of confidence on Chen's China policy.
China claims the island of 23 million as its own and enacted an anti-secession law in March that sanctioned war against Taiwan if it pushes for formal statehood.
Chen, whose Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) stands for Taiwan independence, has rejected China's demand that he reverse his views as a precondition for talks.
China's moves are viewed as part of a divide-and-conquer strategy to isolate Chen and pressure him to kowtow to Beijing.
In a meeting with Soong last week, Hu agreed to a new "two sides, one China" formula as a basis for talks with Taipei and offered economic sweeteners to win the hearts of Taiwan people.
Chen swiftly rejected the new formulation, saying it showed no concessions and undermined the island's sovereignty.
The National Assembly, a legacy from Taiwan's former dual parliament system, is being formed only for the purpose of voting on the constitutional amendments and will be dismantled by the end of the year.
