Apparently, you think the forms of registering things are the essential characteristics that sperates language from other symbols. What a pity. This showed you don't know the fundamentals of language!
I will elaborate on what is language in Chinese (it's inconvenient for me to use chinese now). But I just want to point out - the essential difference is not in the form, but in content. Language, regardless what vehicle it uses, is the most abstract way for describing reality. In the simplest sentences, hidden the most abstract concept. E.g. tree is not an object, it includes a class of things whose multiple aspects are already analyzed and the most essential distinctions already formulated. You will never get the word "tree" before you have already done such analysis. Totem is much more concrete than concepts, it's the medium for triggering collective actions, it's related to concrete actions, but not abstract concept. I welcome your criticism, but presently, you need to learn from other books or from me.
