Personally, I believe many of those Creationists are either religious fanatics or functionally illiterate or both. It's a waste of time discussing serious issues with them, so AVOID THEM LIKE A PLAGUE whenever you see them!
But Fred Hoyle is no idiot. I suppose what he means is that random mutations and natural selection alone are not a sufficient condition for the emergence of complex life forms in such a short time frame.
Gould's notion of "punctuated equilibrium", as I see it, is descriptive rather than explanatory. In other words, we need to supplement Darwin's theory of evolution with theories like Lynn Margulis' notion of "symbiosis" or Stuart Kauffman's concept of "self organization".
The postulation of such mechanisms by no means disproves or invalidates Darwin's important insight, though.
