is a case in point. They tend to speed up the process of gene swapping as a desperate measure to cope in the face of a crisis. On rare occasions new species, i.e. superbugs, do emerge as a result, but you are obviously right to say that most mutations are maladaptive.

As far as I know, many bible belt fundamentalists interpret the Scripture literally; you know, the world was created in 4000BC by God in 7 days, and things like that. It is unlikely they would entertain the idea of a “blind watchmaker” version of God that you are talking about.
