Thomas Metzger is Chinese historian. His had written a well recieved book "ESCAPE FROM PREDICAMENT: Neo-Confucianism and the Evolving Chinese Political Culture." As the title has indicated, it is a book about the developmentof Neo-Confucianism.
However, Metzger was groundbreaking in seeing Mao as a continuation of the Neo-Confucius tradition. While many saw Chinese intellecutuals lack tension, Metzger's "insight" was that the dynamism of Chinese intellectuals were directed inward. They were in constant struggle to achieve the Confucian goals of "内圣外王". Mao was the product of this tradition. In addition, Mao saw revolution as a way to breakout from the neo-confucian girdlock of "知难行易" and "知易行难"。 In this sense, Mao is only continuing the neo-confucian tradition.
