BEIJING (Reuters) - Police detained exiled Chinese dissident and U.S. resident Yang
Jianli early on Saturday after he stole into China on a false passport days ahead of
Vice President Hu Jintao's planned trip to the United States.

Reuters Photo Yang, speaking by telephone from the hotel room where he said he was
ordered to remain by police early on Saturday, told Reuters he was stopped on Friday
afternoon trying to board a plane in the southern city of Kunming.
"I'm just waiting now," Yang said when asked what he thought would happen to him. "I
am prepared to be arrested. I have no I.D. to travel."
The 38-year-old, U.S.-educated democracy activist said he returned to China 10 days
ago for the first time since the 1989 democracy demonstrations to observe the labour
unrest that has simmered in the country's northeastern rust belt since March.
His detention comes during the sensitive lead-up to a reshuffle of China's top leaders
later this year in which Hu is expected to take over as head of the Communist Party
and as president early next year.
A Kunming police official said he had no knowledge of Yang's case.
"I don't think they know who he is, so they sent him to a hotel," said Yang's wife,
speaking by telephone from Boston.
Yang was travelling in China on a close friend's passport after China had refused to
extend his passport, and lives in the United States on a U.S. green card, his wife
said.
OUTSPOKEN CRITIC
Yang said he was stopped at about 6:30 p.m. (1030 GMT) on Friday when police became
suspicious about his travel documents and questioned him for about eight hours after
they found his notes on the labour unrest when they searched his luggage.
While in China, Yang visited the cities of Beijing, Liaoyang, Shenyang, Fushun,
Kunming and others.
"Since the labour movement broke out about one-and-a-half months ago we have tried to
do a lot of things, but we have been helpless," said Yang, who heads the Boston-based
Foundation for China in the 21st Century, which he called an independent think tank
that advocates non-violence and democracy in China.
"I felt I had to come back," he said calmly by telephone from the hotel room he has
been barred from leaving. "I think we have to come back. I think democracy activists
overseas should have the idea, sooner or later, to pursue their dreams."
In mid-March, disgruntled laid-off workers and pensioners took to the streets of at
least two northeastern cities -- Liaoyang and Daqing -- in unprecedented numbers to
protest inadequate benefits.
The demonstrations, which have cooled this month for the most part, were some of the
largest since the Communist Party took power in 1949 and highlight the pressures posed
by millions of workers laid off under wrenching state sector reforms.
Yang, an academic formerly affiliated with Harvard University's Kennedy School of
Government, has been a staunch overseas critic of China's government and he organised
protests in Boston when Chinese President Jiang Zemin (news - web sites) visited in
1997.
In 1989, Yang put aside his studies as a PhD candidate in mathematics at the
University of California, Berkeley, to return to China and participate in the
democracy movement, and has been blacklisted by Beijing ever since.
Yang is the latest in a string of U.S.-trained academics to run into trouble in China.
In a matter of months last year, China detained four in separate cases, hindering
Sino-U.S. relations.
In 1998, another pro-democracy activist living in the United States, Wang Bingzhang,
sneaked into China and was arrested after a nationwide manhunt. He was later expelled.
He had returned to contact dissidents in preparation for the launch of a new political
party, to be called the Justice Party.
