should not be considered as a punishment imposed from outside world, such as prison time for criminals. This is not the same as "cutting off the thief's hand" in Koran.
This is to emphasize cutting off the sins from yourself, and becoming a pure person. It is to tell you that, even if cutting off the sin is as painful as cutting off those body parts, you should do it because it is the most important thing to be without sin.
In reality, how could the hand be the cause of the sin anyways? If you steal, the greedy in your mind is the cause, not your hand. If you drink, it is still your mind is the cause, not your mouth.
