I have worked with 6 Japanese men and one Japanese woman in the States. They are MD and PHD or both. I like the men more than the woman. As a matter I hated the woman who kidded me out of a paper that was my original work. I saw some characters of the Japanese man described by 东京博士 . One Japanese MD’s wife worked in a fish market in New York city and he did not want anyone to know about it. Now I understood that because it is shame for a man to have a working wife in Japan. That Japanese man was so nice to his wife that he picked his wife up every day in the subway station. I would not do that.
When asking them why they were here in the US, all of them did not say they want a better promotion when were back to Japan. But as a matter of fact, they all got promoted. I think that was what they come to the US for. Orientals are all the same in culture, not straightforward to a person who is not a long time friend. This “politeness” is originated from China.
Having said that, it does not mean the American is straightforward in nature. They are just a little better. The complimentary remarks you often hear are just as disgusting.
