The English colonists did not want democracy in HK because it would then weaken their grasp of the crown colony, which would eventually lead to its independence. That's what had happened in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, etc. It was their policy to give independence to these countries eventually.
However, this was NOT the case with HK, because the local people are Chinese, not immigrants from the UK. Therefore, the were bound to be very reluctant to let the local people eventually obtain automacy as they did in Australia etc.
The situation changed when June 4th massacre happened. The English people were shocked, fearing that HK people would fall prey just as people in Beijing. As a result, they hurried to set the foundation for democracy in HK so as to guarantee the safety of the people there whom they thought they had moral obligation to protect. That was the story. There was no conspiracy whatsoever in that.
王希哲 is almost an illiterate, knowing nothing about world affairs. Worse still, he was full armed or equipped by Mao Zedong Thought. Every time I read his article, I cannot help laughing. It has only value of amusement. I know this is harsh to him, but sadly, it is the truth.
