Subject: I need your support
Dear CAL friends,
I never thought I would ask such a support from you, in my wildest dream or nightmare. Nor have I decided to ask for your help lightly --- I did this after more than two weeks of agonizing.
I was abruptly fired from my job in an extremely rude manner, because of my open affiliation with Chinese genome center. Here is the basic points (I have prepared more detailed documents and support evidence):
· My former employer, PPD accuses me violating PPD's media policy by giving an interview to a trade magzine talking about Beijing Genome instutite (BGI), and also hasving conflict of interest with joint appointment with BGI (I was its deputy director);
· PPD however knows my involvement in BGI (my directorship is published on its official website);
· PPD announced me resigned voluntarily, thus forfeiting any severence pay;
· I actually do not have any conflict of interest and did not violate PPD's media policy (I did not talk about any PPD's business);
· I have contributed greatly to PPD's business as its director of molecular biology and bioinformatics, and did not cause any harm to PPD.
· I did not offer any resignation; rather was forced out without any paperwork.
· The way PPD forced MH out violates its own policy.
I have started a legal fight which is very expensive. But I also want to start a fight in the public opinion (PPD is a public company; NYSE: PPDI). I would like to seek your help and support to write a letter to PPD's board of directors to point out how ridiculous such a sudden China-scare hysteria is. I will start to contact media later.
For those of you who know me in CAL, I never supported any "political" agenda in CAL, and tried to maintain CAL as a "pure" academic community. But I feel the core of my case is about the right for us to conduct academic exchange openly. Thus I have decided to come to you for help.
I am still in shock this could happen in Silicon valley......
