詹姆斯写信给老罗斯福那一段，读后觉得这人心里扭曲的可以啊：别人的善意和善行都当作别有用心。当然好处一定先拿着。
以前讲清华历史的时候，有一种意见，认为是美国文化侵略的结果。后来学术界似乎已经不再如此解释了。庚子退款至少给中国带了文明和储备了人才，不是吗？
文中，伊利诺大学校长詹姆斯写信给老罗斯福：“假如美国在年前能将中国学生成功地吸引进来……，那么美国这种从文化上控制中国的方式无疑是最巧妙的”。“是以知识和精神操纵中国领袖的方式。”
伊利诺大学校长埃德蒙.詹姆斯与时任驻美大使伍廷芳一起促进中美关系。 他们一起建立起中国与UIUC（伊利诺伊大学香槟分校）之间的联系。在1910年到1950年之间，三分之一来到美国接受高等教育的中国学生选择参加UIUC。 詹姆斯还为在美国的外国学生建立了第一个办公机构，吴廷芳在1908年发表致辞。詹姆斯功不可没。
詹姆斯的原话（Memorandum concerning the sending of an educational commission to China) ：
The nation which succeeds in educating the young Chinese of the present generation will be the nation which, for a given expenditure of effort, will reap the largest possible returns in moral, intellectual, and commercial influence. If the United States had succeeded thirty-five years ago, as it looked at one time as if it might, in turning the current of Chinese students to this country, and had succeeded in keeping that current large, we should today be controlling the development of China in that most satisfactory and subtile of all ways, -- thru the intellectual and spiritual domination of its leaders.

最后一句试译为：...那么今天在所有的方式中美国将以一种最令人满意和微妙的方式控制中国的发展：通过主导中国领袖的智力和精神。
这比中国日报的翻译更公正些吧。
再则，美国大学校长倡导的政策当然也应该是对美国有利的。否则，吃饱撑的？而且，对中国施加影响, 也是需要付出努力的（原话：for a given expenditure of effort)。这些，统统地看不到？
