这是两个男人，他们因为参与18世纪中叶英格兰苏格兰詹姆斯党人的复辟叛乱而被捕，并被判处绞刑。可是死刑执行之前他们被告知，他们两人中有一人可以免死并被释放，另一人则要赴死。这首歌里唱的就是那个要赴死的勇士写给他心爱的女人的告别信，他把这信托给免死而将走向自由的战友，请求他把信带给他的爱人。
歌词里唱到“低路” ，low road 和 high road，这两个词是歌曲里最具意义的词，low road 指的是人死后灵魂所走的路，而 high road 则是生者前行的路，这两条路将永远不能交汇，正是天上人间之隔。
