as far as personal loss goes, I can't think of anyone as resilient to tragedy as Professor of Religious study, Prof. Elaine Pagels. Lost her young son to sudden illness, then lost her husband to a ski accident in short time. Still, she carries on with her research and publish fabulous scholarly work on early Christianity.
