AP – 42 mins ago....tweet0Share0EmailPrint......HAVANA (AP) — Newly released excerpts of court testimony show an American government subcontractor convicted in Cuba of illegally bringing communications equipment onto the island described himself as a "trusting fool" and said he never meant any harm to the government.

In the transcript, Alan Gross says he had no idea his actions during a USAID-funded democracy-building program would raise the ire of Havana authorities.

Gross said in March 4 testimony that he was "deeply sorry" and that his family was paying the price.

The court was apparently unmoved and sentenced him to 15 years.

Gross' continued imprisonment has become a major sticking point between Washington and Havana, and dampened the prospects for improving relations. The testimony was released Friday by Gross' U.S. lawyer.
