The Soviet Union feared Western powers and the possibility of "capitalist encirclements", had little faith either that war could be avoided, or faith in the Polish army, and wanted nothing less than an ironclad military alliance[41] that would provide a guaranteed support for a two-pronged attack on Germany.
從這點可以看出, 蘇聯完全知道德國的威脅, 但怕被出賣. 要求訂立鐵血軍事同盟, 一旦戰爭爆發, 必須東西方同時全力對德軍作戰. 英法不幹. 事後看來, 蘇聯的疑慮很正常, 也不需要天才才能看到. 法國在邊界上築了銅牆鐵壁, 軍隊完全採守勢, 擺明了只掃自家門前雪. 德國當然也就"合作", 先向東方發難. 德國入侵波蘭時, 英法聯軍在西線基本上啥也沒做, 更證明了這點. 在這種情況下, 蘇聯只好想辦法禍水西引.
