as a graduate school in china, i took a course about geometry optics and aberration theory. i didn't like it, and forgot everything after i passed the exam. i didn't know that many years latter, I got to pick it up , and make a living by designing lens systems.
I
i didn't know how to design lenses at all. i went online, and look for papers about how to use ZEMAX, a cheap software code for optical system design. A book told me that when you design a complex optical system, you just need to work out a first order lay out, and then use an achromat to replace each piece in the system, and then optimize...you let the computer to do everything for you.. including finding best glasses for you.
i did exactly the same thing and took a lot of pains to design a system that seemed workable. The system was fabricated, and was as predicted by the software. The software found 8 different types of glasses for a system of 8 pieces.
I was pretty satisfied with my design. Why should I read lengthy boring optical design books if the computer could do everything for me? I was able to repeat the same design procedure a couple of times latter, and felt good about it. after all, nobody else knew more than me in optics in the company.
