This is the weird thing about calculus. Infinitesimals weren't rigorously defined until 1960's. Before that, calculus rested rigorously on the epsilon-delta definition of limit. Even today, infinitesimals are not part of general math education. The concept is not really needed for most mathematicians. Only the specialists in non-standard analysis ever care about them:
