後来的摘要:
马克吐温和他的伙伴每天爬不了多少,就累的不行,一睡下来就是第二天下午.爬过了40个山头,但总是还有一个.一天他们被困在大雾中什麽也看不见,只好在烂泥里呆着,那里也动不了,埋怨还没到山顶的旅店.
等到大雾散後,他们发现自己离最高的山顶只几公尺远.
跟往常一样,他们累的不行,一动也不动的在旅店里呼呼大睡.
他们被号声吵醒.此行的目的是来看日出.他们俩跳出床,裹上红毡子就往外冲.登上一个木看台,大叫: "The sun is clear above the horizon." (太阳清清楚楚的在水平线上).""Why—nation, it's going DOWN!" (天呀,怎麽往下走!).
他们被其他的旅游人团团围住,没有人看太阳,大家都在看这两个像疯子样的笨蛋.一个姑娘对他们說:"I never saw such a man as you before. I think you are the very last possibility in the way of an ass." (我从没见过像你们这样的人,我想你们是屁股後最有可能留下来的东西".
马克吐温說:"What have I done?" (我们做错了什麽?)
那姑娘說:"What have you done? You've got up at half past seven o'clock in the evening to see the sun rise, that's what you've done." (你们做了些什麽? 你们在傍晚7:30爬起来看日出,这就是你们干的事."
And so the customary quarrel went on. When the sun was fairly down, we slipped back to the hotel in the charitable gloaming, and went to bed again. We had encountered the horn-blower on the way, and he had tried to collect compensation, not only for announcing the sunset, which we did see, but for the sunrise, which we had totally missed; but we said no, we only took our solar rations on the "European plan"—pay for what you get. He promised to make us hear his horn in the morning, if we were alive.
