This has already been done before and tiresome, I mean pop psychoanalyzing evil people such as Hitler: Hitler killed 6 million Jews because his father was strict and his mother spanked him as a baby. Gee whiz, only if he had more love, he may not have done it. I am sure that makes the victims feel much better.
Now it has been applied to Mao. Granted my above comment is not completely fair and this is not the only point he made in his essays, but it also adds nothing and it trivializes the magnitude of the evil committed.
Millions of kids grow up in strict family and getting spanked regularly. Most turn out fine. Everyone has met intellectual snobs in college and most get over it quickly. I think Mao at least had enough intelligence to act magnanimously toward them. For one thing, it is far more satisfying.
