Police rarely protect anything. They won't jump in front of an maniac looking to pump you full of bullets, for two reasons:
1. They don't know the maniac is coming.
2. Police are NOT the Secret Service.
About the only things which police really protect today are their healthy salaries and huge benefits and retirement packages.
In high contrast to that, the best protection in our society is composed of:
1. Widespread prosperity.
2. Responsible and moral (i.e. soundly educated) citizens.
We don't want #1 any more since it threatens corporate profits, and we dont want #2 anymore since it threatens all taxpayers.
P.S. That VT college shooter simply could not have gotten far if the adults around him were allowed to be armed. Individual responsibility is the solution to public irrationality. Q.E.D.
