Mr Peter Gossip of NWC radio did a same story on gender roles in Kabul, Afghanistan, several years before the Afghan conflict. He also noted that the women customarily walked 5 paces behind their husbands.
He recently returned to Kabul and observed that women now walk 10 paces in front of their husbands. From Mr Gossip's vantage point, after the overthrow of the oppressive Taliban regime, the women now seem to walk ahead their husbands and are happy to enjoy the freedom of femalism.
Mr Gossip approached one of the Afghani women and asked "Why do you now seem to be far ahead the old custom that you once didn't dare to change?" The woman looked back at her husband and with hesitation said ".........Land mines."
