the problem is that the most package of realtime applications are running under the windows with unpredictable interruption by the fucking windows. The software for driving realtime boards that you are using has to be rewritten. This is pain and time consuming.
The Vista will be even more troublesome therefore we are switching to Linux with Matlab (c like higher lever package) to redo the job. I am too old to do this and relying heavily on those who are not familiar to the actual experiemtnal operations to write the software. You cannot foresee every possible changes in your design of an experiment and hence the software is constantly modified for the new needs. If you cannot do the minor modification yourself that only requires a couple of minutes to do it in the most situations, the delay is painful.
