Rockland L. Zeiler "Still there" (China) - See all my reviews
Although I felt that "China Inc." was well researched and reflected a talented and engaging writing style, it was conspicuous in the omission of any distraction to its alarmingly promoted thesis. I've spent the past 4 years in China teaching and doing business. China as a great country? The Chinese system is corruption personified, on every level, and is completely opaque. At one point I almost began to believe that every woman in the country would sell sex for money. 90% of married Chinese men visit hookers regularly and it's common among college girls to spend weekends with businessmen to finance their growing appetite for fashion. In fact, most Chinese women have had several abortions and expert predictions envision the scope of the AIDS pandemic in China to be one of "unimaginable proportions". I had prototypes of a furniture sample made at four major furniture factories and not one of them could read and follow a blueprint or basic design instructions, I gave up. The 'boom' cities of China. are an illusion, with 80% unoccupancy rates in quickly constructed buildings that will last for 15 years before having to be condemned. Glitzy government shopping malls and designer boutiques abound and impress newcomers, but if you notice, no one ever buys anything, it's all for show. Most new car production is actually procurred by the government using loans from an insolvent banking system. If you drink water from any lake, river or well in China it will kill you immediately, water from the tap takes a little longer, and the air pollution is like toxic soup. Walk down any street in any of the 'miracle' cities of China and you will see them - the burgeoning hordes of the unemployed are everywhere and you can actually feel the pent-up rage growing as they watch the fat cats in new Mercedes and Lexus sedans, filled with beautiful women dripping expensive jewelry. Not one person I ever spoke with openly dared express a viewpoint that deviated from the government line. The death penalty can be and is doled out for practically any reason, it's discretionary, and by admission there are more executions in China every year than in all other nations combined. The glue that currently holds society together is comprised of empty government promises, fear, and the promotion of an extreme form of blind ultra-nationalism plagiarized from Peronist fascists. China's recent past has been saturated by misery; foreign exploitation and mass drug addiction, instability, wars, civil wars, foreign invasion, disasterous social experiments leading to epic famines, collective insanity, enforced atheism, and now disillusionment as the communist ideology of an entire generation is replaced with wealth mania and the cruelest form of capitalism. China is a messed up country lacking a soul whose uncountable, unknowable, God forsaken population is being exploited by avaricious western business interests and its own pathologically insecure, prestige and power hungry aristocratic elite. Don't fear China. Pray for China.
