Deng was a statesman who could make the tough decisions and take responsibilities for them. I think Deng probably had a moment of epiphany when he saw Zhao in front of the students on the Square—that Zhao wasn’t really up to the job.
If the means of suppression of 6/4 was too drastic, with an army armed with tanks, Deng didn’t really have many options left. The BeiJing anti-riot police simply wasn’t adequate. Anyone who thinks bulldozers would have work, think again. The soldiers in the trucks were pulled out of the drivers’ seats. Anyone who drove in with a bulldozer would probably have suffered the same fate.
Years later, the collapse of the former Soviet Union and the documentary program TianAnMen made it clear that, tragic as it was, Deng probably made the right decision.
Over all, it is a sad sad story and there were no winners.
