Basically, Thurston, Hamilton and Perelman did all the work. Under normal circumstance, one should wait for Perelman’s publication. Since Perelman is strange and probably won’t publish, I suppose it is fair game that other people step in. However, the real big shots don’t deign to do such things. You notice that Yau didn’t put his name on the manuscript.
The Chinese press is going googoo gaga over this and it is interesting to notice that nobody else said anything. The real strange thing is that the Chinese press isn’t giving any credit to Thurston who formed the geometrization conjecture and started the ball rolling in the first place.
