Nothing changes the fact that China and Taiwan have been ruled separately since 1894, with the exception of the four years from 1945 to 1949. Whatever is or isn’t in the current Taiwan constitution doesn’t change this fact. Any people under similar circumstance have earned the right to self-determination.
There are three separate issues here.
1. The moral and legal issue.
2. The emotional issue of Taiwan nationalism vs. Chinese nationalism.
3. The geopolitical issue.
For practical reasons, I do not advocate Taiwan independence mainly because of problem number 2. It is not an emotional problem for the U.S., so they are only interest in issue number 3.
You can’t debate emotions and I suppose we are not discussing geopolitics. Therefore, I suppose that we are debating issue number 1. In that case, I suggest that you put aside your nationalistic feelings, stop threatening war and look at the situation as a dispassionate third person.
