The mainland China today is still a semi-totalitarian country. Every year tons of resources are wasted in propaganda and ideological indoctrination.
No religion is allowed to play the social function of moral check, a key to keep modernization cleaner.
There have been various cases of economic take-off in authoritarian countries, like Bismarch Germany, Meiji Japan, and Russia 1905-1913. However, not a single totalitarian state has ever maintained long-term prosperity, from Hitler Germany to USSR.
