Samples were taken from the "extremely thin" carcass and the rest of the animal was rendered, or cooked at a high temperature, to turn it into a food additive that could be sold as feed for species that do not contract brain-wasting diseases like BSE, he added.
"The rendering brings the product to a temperature high enough and long enough that it kills the organism, but even with that, to be on the safe side, it is not fed to animals who get BSE. Hogs, chickens do not get BSE," Vanclief said.
He said the rendered carcass would not be fed to ruminants, or animals with multiple stomachs, such as cows, goats or sheep, which are prone to the protein disease of the brain.
IMPORTED OR FED INFECTED FOOD?
Because the animal had been deemed unfit for human consumption and the carcass had been rendered, the samples taken on Jan. 31 were marked non-urgent and set aside for testing at a provincial laboratory in Alberta. The lab tested the samples on Friday, May 16, Vanclief said.
"They notified us on Friday. We tested it on Saturday in Winnipeg and got a positive result on Sunday. So we sent it to a lab in England on Monday and they confirmed it on Tuesday morning," he said.
