"They made up story to let people believe they are almost Jesus."

This is perfect fine. They wanted people believe that they ARE Jesus, not that they used to be Jesus. It is like to say

I made up story to let you believe I'm your father.

What you think if I say

I made up story to let you believe I was your father.
