Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday described the collapse of the Soviet Union as the greatest geopolitical catastrophe of the 20th century.
In his state of the nation speech to Parliament, broadcast live on Russian television, Putin said the breakup of the Soviet Union in 1991 was a real drama which left tens of millions of Russians outside the Russian Federation, the BBC reported Monday.
He also said Russia must develop as a free and democratic country, but stressed that Russia will decide for itself the pace, terms and conditions of moving toward democracy.

We are a free nation, and our place in the modern world will be defined only by how successful and strong we are, the president said.
Referring to people who believe Russia needs a strong authority and cannot adapt to democratic principles, Putin said, I would certainly want to bring those who voice such an opinion back to reality, the Russian news agency RIA-Novosti reported.
This was Putin's sixth state of the nation address, and his second since being re-elected in 2004.
