karuna won't you find it amusing if I am the cameraman for an INdian television channel and as soon as I land on any western soil say in britain or united states and immidiately I head for the bronx or west virginia or some inner city ghetto to get some 'choice' clips. Should I be called a 'pervert' or am I working on 'orders' from above ??
IMO this is what has been going on for ages !
Similarly look at reports on China !! On the pretext of some 'China opens its doors' series recently broadcasted on BBC, the british reporter was running around the place to Xinjiang (to portray the Muslim Uighur situation) and then hence on to the sorrow of displaced farmers because of the three gorges project, and environmental damages due to the project and then onto a 'sham' communist party election in a village, and then onto how the funny commies were constructing a school by flattening a hillock and displacing all those who previously lived there (without their permission of course, they were just informed of the move), and then with a smirk on China's cities etc. All this under pretext of 'understanding' China's economic climb.
All of the documentaries aired in that 'China week' on BBC has such twists in the tale, it was full of human rights, rural poor, huge carbon emissions, cost of China's development, lack of democracy, how poor are turning poorer, China's upcoming buildings are not attractive, and on and on.
Then there was a short documentary again aired on BBC which was on Chinese Indians living in Kolkata and the main theme therein was how the Chinese were detained in Rajasthan by the Indians during 1965. Some of these Chinese had younger generation moving onto places like Canada as immigrants and there the BBC successfully managed to extract out of one such Chinese lady now living in Toronto that India should compensate them or at least apologize for the Rajasthan detention. And with that note BBC concluded the documentary on Chinese Indians living in Kolkata.
This is the same treatment meted out by western news agencies while reviewing erstwhile Eastern European states, Russia, India and so on and on. All the news clips, if at all they start on a positive note, will end only with a twist in the tail.
Propaganda at its best.
