"As Jacob Bronowski pointed out, the second law of thermodynamic is widely (and wrongly) regarded as inimical to life. Misconstrued, the second law makes the origin of order, the rise of pulsing and purposeful cells, appear mysterious indeed. This outlook is changing, however. The final "heat death" of the universe still looms, but the inexorable press of entropy in the universe at large is now friend, not foe, of the scattered growth in complexity here and there. This new worldview, moreover, put ordered entities in charge of their evolution. No longer passive and pummeled into shape by a ruthless and fickle environment, living and quasi-living systems are seen as agents of their own fate."
