At that time, I was unaware of the suffering of my old buddies. My precautions paid off and I was left untouched. None of my siblings were purged by the campaign, either, since all of us had been careful. Even so, as a Chinese saying puts it, "disaster may fall like a bolt even when one is sitting at home doing nothing". Soon misfortune started to visit almost every Chinese family.

In October, 1968, Chairman Mao issued another "supreme edict". It said: "It is very necessary for the intellectual youth to go to the countryside to receive re-education from the poor and lower-middle peasants. (We) should persuade cadres and other people in cities to send their children to the countryside. Launch a mobilization." The "intellectual youth" here meant high school graduates. At that particular time, it included all the six years of high school students.

Sending the "intellectual youth" to the countryside was a psychiatric obsession of Mao's. When he was young, his tyrant father, a rich peasant, tried to force him to drop out of school to help with farm work. Although Mao successfully escaped the life path his father had arranged for him, he bitterly resented his father for this. When he became the father figure of the whole country, however, he showed a unique enthusiasm in sending educated youths to the countryside. Even before the Cultural Revolution, he had encouraged urban youths to go to villages voluntarily, promising them that "the countryside is a vast world where youngsters can accomplish a lot". Now he wanted to banish all high school students there. This was no longer a voluntary matter.

I had finished my studies and should have graduated in the summer of 1966, but I was retained in school because of the campaign. Thus, I was one of the "intellectual youth" to be banished. For the only time in history, all the six years of students graduated at the same time and every high school was emptied.
