Brain Imaging of Cortical Specialization at the Chinese Language in 7-year Olds
By: Jenny Kwok (Joint Laboratories for Language and Cognitive Neuroscience The University of Hong Kong)
The Chinese language differs from English and other alphabetic languages in phonology, orthography, semantics, and syntax. Is language functioning also left-lateralized for Chinese people? Recent research indicates a strong left hemispheric lateralization in Chinese adults, though it remains unknown as to whether hemispheric language dominance has been well established in young Chinese children.
Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) was used to investigate how language processing is specialized in 7-year-old Chinese children. Two experimental tasks devised were covert word generation and phonological judgment.
In the former, subjects silently generated a Chinese word that was semantically related to a viewed character. In the latter, subjects judged whether or not the two presented Chinese characters had the same tone.
Results indicated strong left lateralization in the typical language areas for the semantic task, but bilateral activations for the phonological task. This pattern of findings suggests that left hemispheric Chinese language dominance has been well established at semantic level by age 7, though neural systems for Chinese phonological processing are less consolidated in children as in adults, reflecting developmental plasticity.
The present study helps to establish normal parameters in order to identify language lateralization in young epilepsy and brain-damaged patients, while also helping to build up a rigid background for carrying out other pediatric research.
