China: 166 miners still trapped
BEIJING, China (CNN) -- At least 166 miners remain trapped underground after a gas explosion Sunday at a state-owned coal mine in northwest China, according to state-run Xinhua news agency.
So far, 127 miners have been rescued alive from the Chenjiashan mine in Shaanxi Province, Xinhua reported.
Forty-one were hospitalized, including five in serious condition, it said. Several teams are on the scene trying to rescue the remaining miners, whose status is not clear.
One report on China's People's Daily Web site said heavy smoke was rising out of the mine's ventilation shafts immediately after the explosion.
Miners above ground tried to communicate with the workers below, but communications were already cut, according to the People's Daily report.
It is the the third big mine accident in China in the past six weeks.
A deadly blast on October 20 in the Daping mine in central Henan province left 148 people dead, and a fire in a series of iron mines in Hebei province claimed at least 68 lives on November 20, with many more still missing.
The explosion at the Chejiashan mine incident occurred about 7 a.m. (6 p.m. Saturday ET, 11 p.m. Saturday GMT). The noon newscast of state-run television spoke of "big casualties".
According to the Tongchuan Mining Administration, which operated the mine, 293 miners were underground when the blast occurred.
China is notorious for mining accidents. The country's mining industry relies heavily on poorly maintained, outdated technology and has among the world's highest death rates.
Beijing has tried to crack down on unsafe conditions nationwide, but authorities say local officials leave many questionable mines open in order to keep unemployment low.
So far, 4,153 people have been reported killed in the first nine months of this year in fires, floods and explosions.
Last month, a massive explosion in the Daping Mine in central Henan province left 148 people dead. It was sparked after mine operators failed to realize that extending the mine's shaft would greatly increase its gas level.
Insufficient ventilation in the mine allowed the gas to build up and mix with fresh air, and the explosion was ignited by sparks from mine machinery, government-run newspapers and the Xinhua News Agency said.
The explosion on October 20 was the country's deadliest mine accident since 2000.
It occurred "deep in a complicated stratum" inside the mine, Xinhua said. When mine operators extended the shaft, gas rushed out, it added, citing Zhao Tiechui, deputy head of the State Administration of Production Safety.
Also, in the past week, rescue workers have recovered the bodies of 68 Chinese miners killed when fire swept through a group of iron mines in the northern province of Hebei on November 20.
But as many as 119 miners remain missing, Shang Fumin, an official with the investigation group, said Thursday, according to Xinhua.
A preliminary investigation showed the fire broke out due to an electronic cable igniting in one iron mine. The fire soon spread to four other mines. Nine people involved were detained by police, Xinhua reported.
The government has repeatedly vowed to do more to improve mine safety.
