01【胡平】∶少有被欺者不先自欺也。
【芦笛】∶Crap. It is often the opposite: Schemers (such as Hitler, Stalin, Mao etc) made up lies
to deceive others, then they were cheated by those lies in the end. It is particularly true with dictators
that “a lie repeated a thousand times turns into the truth”.
02【胡平】∶你在孔雀开屏时偏偏只去看它的屁股，那不是孔雀有缺陷而是你自己没品味。
【芦笛】∶What kind of “taste” is this? Teaching people to turn away from ugly side of life?
03【胡平】∶所谓高贵，不是一种外在的身分，而是一种内在的品质；不是舆论加诸的荣誉，而是自己树立的目标；不是一个凝固的头衔，而是一种持续的追求。
【芦笛】∶One thing is for sure: a real noble man never talks like Hu Ping, because he does not
even realize he is noble, let alone taking the trouble to define “nobility”.
04【胡平】∶传统社会有一套道德标准，现代社会也有一套道德标准。或许，没有哪一套道德标准是绝对的坏。最坏的是从纯粹的利己出发而采取双重标准。这就是社会在转型期间往往出现道德沦丧的基本原因。
【芦笛】∶How could he be so stupid? Moral “vacuum” appears because the old moral codes
are abolished artificially or collapsed spontaneously whilst the new ones have yet to be established.
That’s why such a stage is called “transient”. It is a social problem, not an individual one.
Besides, there are always people adopting double standards regardless of the social norms. They
are called “hypocrites”, often abundant in a puritan society.
05【胡平】∶强盗只是想抢东西并不是想杀人。强盗只是因为害怕别人告发才杀死目击者。人世间一切大的过错，几乎都是为了掩饰先前的一件过错、一件较小的过错而犯下的。
【芦笛】∶ Jesus! He can never think clearly. Once again, he has confused two entirely different
concept: “mistakes” and “crimes”. Even a semi-idiot knows the difference.
For example, Hitler committed genocide, not to cover up a minor crime, but to wipe out a race he hated.
He also made loads of strategic mistakes in the war, not because he wanted to cover up, but because
he was an incompetent gambler, always desperate to win back what he had lost.
A man who has made more mistakes in order to cover up the previous one is a criminal, whist a man
who has done so in order to recover the loss he had caused is an incompetent gambler.
06【胡平】∶什么是完美？完美不是一种状态，完美是一个永恒的过程。那些终身不懈地追求完美的人就是完美的。
【芦笛】∶Can he ever learn to think logically at all? So a person is not a creature but an everlasting
process? Besides, all the concepts in maths (such as a circle) are perfect. So the concept of perfection
refers to an ideal status, not a damn process! Only a second-rate Marxist can utter such crap as Mr Hu does.
07【胡平】∶不正经的人可恶，太正经的人可怕。
【芦笛】∶ Baby talk (and a timid baby for that matter). How come it never occurred to him that he should
have defined “正经” first? If he is talking about people’s attitudes towards life, then a cynical person
(“quanru” as he called) is often more enlightening than a self-righteous person (qingliu). If he is
talking about personal life style, then an easy-going man makes people relax whist guy who is too
serious kills people with boredom.
08【胡平】∶“江山易改，秉性难移”的另一个意义是，改变信仰的内容是容易的，改变信仰的方式或态度却很难。一个极端主义者一辈子可以改变好几次信仰的主义，但始终不变的是那种极端的态度。一个具有开放态度的人，即使他信仰的是一套封闭的主义，他也仍能保持其心灵的开放。反之，一个心灵封闭的人，哪怕他信仰了一套开放的主义，他也不改其封闭。在现实生活中，我们与其说是在和不同的主义打交道，不如说是在和不同的态度、不同的性格打交道。
【芦笛】∶He can’t understand anything. The most important thing is THE WAY OF THINKING!
09【胡平】∶骄傲就是你觉得有很多人在羡慕地注视着你。
【芦笛】∶Arrogance or pride? An arrogant man believes others to be inferior. A proud man finds
himself accomplished.
10【胡平】∶在这个充满危险与诱惑的世界上，意志薄弱等于缺德。
【芦笛】∶What a crap! This guy can never learn to speak without mentioning “morality”! So shall
we go and kill all those with weak will-power?
He is so influenced by Confucian crap that always emphasizes the importance of individuals’
self-improvement in morality. Wake up! A rational social system is what you should be looking for!
11【胡平】∶杀生或许只是出于需要，喜欢看杀生则是出于残忍。
【芦笛】∶Not necessarily. What about kids? To a large degree, an immature nation is just like a kid.
Humanitarianism represents maturity and it takes time for a nation to become mature, just like a kid.
12【胡平】∶再没有比正义感和妒忌心更相反又更相似的了。正义感和妒忌心都是一股不平之气。正当的不平是正义感，不正当的不平是妒忌心。
【芦笛】∶ As I said many times, paradoxically, a strong sense of justice is not only an indication of
the immaturity of a nation, but also the very source of the nation-wide catastrophe, which is far too
worse than any other sin like jealousy. But of course he will never be able to understand this.
13【胡平】∶嫉妒只有戴着假面出场才可能对被嫉妒者造成损伤。一旦假面脱落，那损伤就反过来指向嫉妒者自身。
【芦笛】∶Baby talk again. What happened to Liu Shaoqi, the very target of Mao’s jealousy?
Is he suggesting that Mao did not drop his mask?
14【胡平】∶撒切尔夫人在论及批评时说道∶“我一见到恶意中伤就非常高兴，因为我知道，一旦别人对你进行个人攻击，那就表明他们在政治上已经理屈词穷了。”这应是铁娘子的经验之谈。
【芦笛】∶So why did all the leaders of the so-called “pro-democracy movement” I met on line
rely on personal attack as their only means of “persuasion”? It is not because they have run out of moral
justifications, but because they have no brains at all. So much so that they can only differentiate mankind into
two categories: comrades and foes.
15【胡平】∶不怨天尤人乃是一种极大的美德，也是一种极高的要求。在构成一颗刚毅的灵魂的诸多因素中，不诉苦肯定是其中不可或缺的一种。
【芦笛】∶If no one complained, how could a society ever progress and an enterprise improve?
16【胡平】∶坦率与粗野，只有一线之隔。
【芦笛】∶What is he suggesting here? Better to be a hypocrite?
17【胡平】∶欺骗必定是隐瞒，隐瞒未必是欺骗。
【芦笛】∶ Baby talk like “the sun rises in the east”.
18【胡平】∶那些声言对万事不认真的人，在金钱上照例是很认真的。
【芦笛】∶Ridiculous generalization. Exceptions are countless.
19【胡平】∶孩童时代的好强、好奇、好动，哪怕我们仅只保存其中一项，到头来，我们都能成就一番事业。
【芦笛】∶Baby talk. Once again, he failed to define “好强、好奇、好动”. Has Hitler who
believed in his superiority fulfilled his mission? Are those guys at the Low Life Corner not curious
enough? Needless to say, if you are as restless as a boy, you can never sit tight and learn anything.
20【胡平】∶说“岁月如梭”、“岁月如流”都不够准确，因为岁月不是匀速运动。岁月是加速运动，如高山滚石∶随着年龄的增长，我们只觉得时间越过越快。
【马悲鸣】∶这只是主观感觉，既不真实，也不客观。
【芦笛】: Still, announcing such a great discovery makes the author a philosopher (a cheap one
though).
21【胡平】∶一个人精神衰老的标志是∶你觉得一切都不再新鲜。
【芦笛】: The indication of maturity is that you can always suppress the first impulse when you
witness something unfair. Sadly, the “cream” of the overseas Chinese society can never reach
this stage.
22【胡平】∶“四十而不惑”的意思是，人到了四十岁，应当知道自己适宜做什么，不适宜做什么。“不惑”是指对自己的角色定位不再困惑。
【芦笛】: A man without doubts can only be a youngster. Confucius could not be more wrong when
he said so.
23【胡平】∶青年的确是人生中最美好的一段。没走到的人巴不得早点抵达，走过了的人个个舍不得离开。
【芦笛】: Yeah, if you are a hog driven by lust.
24【胡平】∶勤奋者从不认为自己勤奋，他们只是觉得别人比自己更懒惰而已。
【芦笛】: A real diligent man is always too busy to notice others’ laziness.
25【胡平】∶我们这代人的不幸在于，我们经历了太多的恶，各种各样的恶，几乎所有的恶。有些恶原本是相反相克的，有此恶则必无彼恶，殊不料在我们的有生之年却让我们全遇上了——虽说是在不同的阶段。在经历了如此多的恶之后，心地善良者比任何时候都更渴望有信仰，但也比任何时候都更难于保持信仰。
【芦笛】: His personal misfortune is that he has jailed himself in his personal experience, and hence
can never get rid of the habit of judging the world with only two words: good or evil. Therefore, it is
beyond his intelligence to understand that there were so many evil-doings simply because people
had pursued “ultimate virtue” through evil approaches.
26【胡平】∶真正的勇士不一定喜欢冒险，他只是在危险到来时不退却而已。
【芦笛】: A real hero uses his brain, not his muscle. Sadly, most Chinese people use neither. Instead, they use their saliva glands.
27【胡平】∶人生最大的悖论是，许多禁果总要在吃了以后才知道不该去吃。
【芦笛】: That happens only to idiots. Do you need to inject heroine in order to know its side-effects?
28【胡平】∶人生最大的失败不在于你没有得到你想得到的，而在于你没有去做你想做的。在我看来，幸福的一生就是一直能做自己喜欢做的事情。
【芦笛】: I agree, although I know if I keep doing something I really like, sooner or later I will get bored.
29【胡平】∶当诤友并不难，难的是你诤了之后别人还把你当作友。
【芦笛】: That’s how you screen for real friends.
