Giving two golds bad precedent for future disputes
David Climer, Senior writer and columnist
Somewhere, the 1972 US men's basketball team is demanding a recount.
And Roy ones is wondering if they'll take another look at the videotape of that fight in Seoul.
Come to think of it, anyone who has ever een given wrong directions to the medal stand and wound up with silver instead of gold is hereby invited to the exchange department at IOC headquarters. They've let the genie out of the bottle. When the International Olympic Committee lost its mind and issued a second gold medal in pairs figure skating, it established a precedent that gives every second-place finisher grounds for appeal.
They've dumbed down the Olumpics. From this point forward, the IOC no longer has to give a B and instead can give two A's and a C. Too close to call? Hey, no problem. Gold medals all around.
Why stop at two? Maybe Mr. and Mrs. Bronze would like to take two steps up to the top of the platform, too.
Matching medals i fine if somehow there is a dead-heat tie in a given event, either on judges' scorecards of stop-watches.
But when you start sharing the wealth for any other reason, you have effectively lowered the gold standard.
The joint argument by the IOC and International Skating Union for their action is that biases, politics and possible vote-swapping exerted an undue influence on the competition.
