BEIJING, Nov 17 (Reuters) - A 23-year-old "cyber dissident" detained last year
for criticising the Chinese government may be released soon, family members s
aid on Monday.
Four officials from the Beijing Public Security Bureau visited Liu Di's home l
ast week to convey the news, her grandmother said.
Liu Di, a former psychology major at Beijing Normal University who wrote under
the screen name "Stainless Steel Mouse," became a high-profile symbol for dem
ocracy and free speech in China since her detention in November 2002.
Liu's case comes during a crackdown on Internet content -- from politics to po
rnography -- and as the government struggles to gain control over a new and po
pular medium.
"I am hopeful she will be released, but it's not definite," grandmother Liu He
ng, 81, told Reuters by telephone. "They could still lengthen her detention if
they find additional evidence."
She said police had not given a date for the release, but a Hong Kong-based hu
man rights group said Liu could be freed by the end of November, before Premie
r Wen Jiabao flies to the United States for a visit.
Liu wrote political satires about the ruling Communist Party and posted messag
es in Internet chatrooms calling for the release of online dissidents. Liu was
never formally charged and has been held at Beijing's Qincheng Prison for pol
itical detainees.
The Hong Kong-based Information Centre for Human Rights and Democracy said in
early November that prosecutors had rejected police recommendations to indict
Liu on broad charges of subversion due to lack of evidence.
Liu's father, Liu Qinghua, said her release would be a good sign for other dis
sidents detained as part of the same sweep. They include long-time activist Ji
ang Lijun, online magazine writer Li Yibin and another man named Wu Yiran.
Police have also detained at least two people for organising online petitions
calling for Liu's release, which have drawn thousands of signatures.
Du Daobin, a civil servant, was detained in October, and Luo Changfu, 39-year-
old laid-off worker, has been sentenced to three years in prison.
In addition to jailing dissidents, China has created a special Internet police
force, blocked some foreign news sites and shut down domestic sites posting p
olitically incorrect fare.
