In a poor country like China, ordinary people do not intentionally preserve dog breeds.All village dogs are medium sized free roaming dogs. Once they grow big, their masters could not provide enough food for them. The wander about to look for food themselves. They eat anything from human crap to small animals. I saw one of my dog hunting frogs and bugs.They still think their master's yard their home, and come back to sleep and rest.
One good thing for them is that they can mate freely. Almost no one cares about their dog's sex life. I say "almost", because I did care about it one time. When I lived in a village in China, I had a female dog. One early evening time, I saw a huge black dog sneaked into our yard and trying to mate with my small female dog. I jumped up, grabbed a brick and threw at him. He climbed the wall and ran, tail between his legs.
To me this big male dog was the most hated dog because he belongs to the richest family in the family- the village accountant. In Mao's time, village account could steal a lot of grains and kept his family and dog well fed. Also the dog was so vicious that I always stay far away from his walled compound. However, he crossed the line came to my territory, I became the most vicious one.
From online pictures, I saw these free roaming dogs in Tibet. They look exactly the same as village dogs in China. They are just big and strong enough to live all by themselves. If well fed, these dogs could grow up to 50 lbs, and be regarded as a big dog, like the village accountant's dog. However, most of them are much smaller, like people in Mao's China or North Korea.
